Historical Note
Meany Hall for the Performing Arts is named for Edmond S. Meany, a popular history professor who taught at the University of Washington from 1897 to 1932 and is known by many as "the father of the university." The original Meany Hall, built in 1908, was razed after it was damaged severely by an earthquake in 1965. The current building, completed in 1975, has a 1,212-seat theater; a smaller theater that seats up to 300; full facilities for the dance program; an orchestra rehearsal room; and other facilities.
