Biographical Note
Port Townsend, Washington, was named for George Townshend, 1st Marquess of that name, by his friend, Captain George Vancouver, when he landed there in the late 18th century on one of his many exploration trips. It was a safe harbor, and many believed that it would, with a little development, become the biggest shipping port in the Northwest. Many homes were built with this idea in mind, and American settlers arrived (removing the 'h' from the port's name) with a mind for money and business. However, the railroad failed to connect a line in Port Townsend to one in Tacoma, and the ever-growing ports in the Puget Sound proved detrimental to the economy of the bay town.
Content Description
This collection contains photographs of Port Townsend bay, construction, businesses, street scenes and life in the area, and prominent people including George John Patrick Dominic Townshend, 7th Marquess Townshend, the great-grandson of the town's namesake.
