Historical Note

A. Elizabeth Watson was a consultant and author specializing in heritage areas in the United States. Beginning her independent consulting career in 1993, she contributed her expertise to more than a dozen heritage areas, integrating regional planning with resource conservation, tourism development, and community education. As a principal consultant for Heritage Strategies LLC, she played a key role in numerous historic preservation and land conservation projects, including greenway initiatives. In 2002, Watson became the part-time executive director of the Stories of the Chesapeake Heritage Area on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. She was also a published author, co-writing Saving America’s Countryside: A Guide to Rural Conservation (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1989; 2nd ed. 1997), a book that stemmed from her early work with the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Rural Program. Her career also included roles with the Land Trust Alliance and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources. Beyond her work in policy and preservation, Watson was the co-producer of the 1992 award-winning film Chesapeake: Living Off the Land, created for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Throughout her career, Watson remained committed to the intersection of historic preservation, environmental conservation, and community engagement.
