Historical Note
Dr. Stanley Pons, of the University of Utah, and Dr. Martin Fleischman, of the University of Southampton, England, announced their discovery of cold fusion on March 23, 1991. Local and national news immediately focused on the revelation, and continued to report on it over the next two years as the controversy surrounding the experiment developed.
Content Description
The Cold Fusion audio-visual collection consists of 20 VHS tapes and 5 audiocassette tapes of conferences, meetings, and newscasts related to cold fusion. Footage includes the press conference, held at the University of Utah, in which the discovery was announced, and other press conferences at meetings of the Electrochemical Society of America and the American Physical Society, in which Pons' and Fleischman's experiment is both disputed and confirmed. The remaining items are recordings of radio and television news coverage of the cold fusion controversy. The University of Utah's radio station (KUER) and television station (KUED) are represented, as well as the three commercial stations (KSL, KTVX and KUTV) in Salt Lake City. Network news stories by CBS and ABC are also included in the collection. Items 9-19 are video-cassettes prepared by Utah News Clips of Salt Lake City.
