Historical Note

William Horsfall was a doctor in the Coos Bay area. Born in Lancashire, England in 1867 and moved to the United States with his parents in 1870-1871. His father being a missionary, his family moved across the country from Cherokee territory in Kansas, to Montana, and then to Newport, Oregon. They would eventually settle in nearby Marshfield, now known as the town of Coos Bay, where his father built a church. On his own, Horsfall graduated from Stanford University (then called Cooper Medical college) with a doctorate in 1982. He worked for the Mayo Clinic for a short period of time, but returned to Coos Bay in 1983 and began to practice medicine there. He was a real "Pioneer Doctor", where the terrain required that he be a skilled outdoorsman if he was to reach his patients. In all, he would deliver over 1,000 babies throughout his career and travel by foot, horse, and boat to reach those in need.
