Historical Note
Hugh Gordon Deane Jr. (1916-2001) was a journalist and author focusing on East Asia. In 1936, as a student at Harvard University, Deane participated in an exchange program to Lingnan University in China. During World War II Deane worked in the South Pacific for the Coordinator of Information and then as a naval intelligence officer on Douglas MacArthur's staff. From 1946-1950 he worked as a correspondent in Tokyo, writing about eastern Asia for multiple papers. During the McCarthy era he was blacklisted. Deane was a founder of the US-China Peoples Friendship Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering diplomacy between the U.S. and China. He edited the USCPFA's paper the U.S. China Review. He worked as an editor of the union newspaper The Hotel Voice from 1960-1986. In 1963 Deane wrote the anti-war pamphlet, The War in Vietnam, with a forward by Bertrand Russell. He is the author of two books, Good Deeds and Gunboats: Two Centuries of American-Chinese Encounters (1990) and The Korean War 1945-1953 (1999), as well as numerous journal and article publications.
Content Description
The collection consists of 7 boxes and one oversize folder of material created by or relating to Hugh Deane Jr. Material dates from the 1930s to 2001, and primarily documents his work as a journalist in eastern Asia and his involvement with the US-China Peoples Friendship Association. The collection is arranged in four series: personal files, publications, research materials, and photographic slides. Materials include personal documents and correspondence, research material and writings, military files, photographic slides, audiocassette tapes and 78 rpm records.
The collection was donated to Lewis & Clark College in January 2022 by Hugh Deane's son, Michael Deane.
