Biographical Note

Grover Vernon McCracken (1919-2001) was a was a military veteran who served in the 84th Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees) during World War II. The 84th Naval Construction Battalion built naval bases and other military bases to provide infrastructure for the United States forces in the Pacific theater of World War II. Vernon was a commissioned officer with the National Guard, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of the American Legion. McCracken worked for the Employment Security Commission, the Arizona Laborer's Training Center, and the Arizona Industrial Commission.

The Grover Vernon McCracken photograph collection contains 291 black-and-white photographs depicting McCracken's family and friends and his military service in the 84th Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees) during World War II, including pictures of construction, buildings, aircraft, and the people, places, and battles in the Philippines and Japan. The collection spans about 1930 through the 1940s. This collection contains materials related to war. Some are graphic.
