Biographical Note

Edith Bolte MacCracken was born February 16, 1869. She was the wife of Dr. S. Gordon MacCracken who had practiced in Ashland, Oregon and was the vice-president of the Jackson County Medical Society in 1924. She served as a president of the Auxiliary to the Jackson County Medical Society from 1934 to 1935. She initiated a survey in April 1935 to collect biographical data of physicians in Jackson County from around 1850 to 1935. Several members of the Auxiliary assisted her in collecting the data and her sons typed the compiled materials. She completed the compilation in August 1935 when she was 66 years old and later, in February 1946, she made updates to the work. She died in April 1946.

Content Description

The collection consists mainly of biographical information about Jackson County physicians who returned a completed questionnaire sent to them by Edith Bolte MacCracken. The majority of the documents include specific information about physicians that includes: education, family, and location of practice. Other materials include documents concerning the histories of hospitals and public health associations in Jackson County, the history of the Jackson County Medical Society, rosters of officers of the Society and the Auxiliary, reports of the Auxiliary, and an historical memoriam of earlier people of Southern Oregon.

Arrangement

The original order of the collection was maintained, and is divided into six folders by subject.

Custodial History

Created by the Jackson County Medical Society Auxiliary and compiled by the president of the Auxiliary, Mrs. Gordon (Edith Bolte) MacCracken of Ashland Oregon. The materials were transferred from the OHSU Pacific Northwest Archives to the OHSU Archives. The record was completed in 1935 when Mrs. MacCracken was 66 years old. It was updated in February 1946. The materials were transferred from the OHSU Pacific Northwest Archives to the archives collections. The original title was "History of Physicians of Jackson County, Past and Present"
