Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Ray Lewis Stout entered Oregon Agricultural College in 1901 and graduated in 1905 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was born on January 17, 1885, in Mehama, Oregon. He married Mabel Vantress (born January 8, 1887) on June 1, 1911; their son, Wendell Henry Stout, was born September 27, 1915. The year after graduating he began working at the Pacific Power and Light Company, where he would continue to work until his retirement on November 1, 1950. After his retirement he was offered a job from the Ebasco Services Inc. of New York to help construct a nation wide electric power system for the government of Greece, which he accepted. Ray and his wife then spent two and a half years in Greece, returning to Portland in 1953, where they spent the rest of their lives. His wife Mabel died on March 15, 1979, at the age of 92, and Ray died on November 21, 1984, at the age of 99.

Most of the photographs were made by either W.G. Emery or W.S. Gardner, both of whom were early 20th century photographers in Corvallis. Two of the photographs in the collection are available online in the Best of the Archives digital collection. Links are provided from the item descriptions below.
