Historical Note

Robert “Bob” Torry was a professor of English at the University of Wyoming. Dr. Torry received his B.A. from Hiram College in 1972 and his Ph.D. from State University of New York at Buffalo in 1988. At the University of Wyoming, he was an instructor in both English and Religious Studies. Robert joined the Department of English at the University of Wyoming in 1983 and won many teaching awards, including Top Professor, Top Teacher, and the John P. Ellbogen Lifetime Teaching Award which he received in 2011. Dr. Torry was a well-loved instructor and often won student voted awards. He taught classes in religious studies, film, general English, and the Honors Freshman Program. Dr. Torry was also a scholar, writing many articles in the fields of English, film studies, and religious studies. He co-wrote and co-taught with University of Wyoming, Religious Studies professor, Dr. Paul Flesher, including their book “Film and Religion: An Introduction.” Many of Torry’s published articles discuss notable films, including King Kong, Jaws, and the Wild Bunch. He also studied Edgar Allen Poe’s literary works. Dr. Torry passed away on December 14, 2012.

This collection contains the personal and professional papers of Dr. Robert Torry. Included in the collection are manuscripts and final copies of Torry’s published works, teaching materials for his classes, reference works, and event posters for film events held at the University of Wyoming during his tenure. Also included are photographs and newspapers related to Torry and the university, as well as awards Torry received.
