Historical Note

In 1964, the Academic Policy Committee submitted to the Faculty Council a report recommending the elimination of all undergraduate education programs at the University of Utah so that teacher education could be improved by an upgrade to a graduate program. This report received unanimous approval from the Faculty Council. The College of Education responded to the Committee's recommendations by issuing its own report stating its full agreement with the proposed upgrade ot teacher education at the University. The College of Education's report was also adopted by the Faculty Council and in keeping with the two reports, the State College of Education became the Graduate School of Education in 1968.

During the period covered by the bulk of the collection (1977-1987), the Graduate School of Education underwent major changes. In 1980, the Department of Education Studies was created, however the univesity-wide budget crisis of 1986 led to the elimination of several programs: Instructional Psychology and Rehabilitation Counseling in the Department of Educational Psychology and the Hearing Impaired Program in the Department of Special Education.
