Historical Note

James Albert Shaw was the son of Tom A. Shaw (1847-1932), who came to Wyoming from Texas in 1878 on a cattle drive. He worked on the Duck Bar Ranch and bought part of the ranch in 1886. He married in 1889 and established and operated the Twin Pine Ranch near Wheatland, in Platte County, Wyoming. James A. Shaw was born near Douglas, Wyoming, on October 13, 1893. He grew up on his parents' ranch. In 1920 he went to Elko, Nevada, where he worked as a mechanic and clerk for the United States Air Mail Service for a year. In 1921 he returned to the ranch, where he again worked for his father. James Shaw participated in the arrest of train robber Bill Carlisle in 1919.
