Description: Centennial Convocation part 1: black/white, 30 min.
Scope and Content: A kinescope of the television broadcast, November 16, 1961, of the academic convocation celebrating the first hundred years of the University of Washington. Originating in Edmundson Pavilion, the convocation had, as its featured speaker, the President of the United States, John F. Kennedy.
This first part includes an introduction by the television commentator, Reg Miller; the academic processional; the processional of distinguished guests; the invocation by Thomas Connolly, Archbishop of the Dioceses of Seattle; and the opening remarks by the Governor of the State of Washington, Albert D. Rosellini.

Lewis, the Bishop of the Diocese of Olympia; and the Recessionals.

Description: Change is the Challenge: color, 22 min.
Scope and Content: Shows how the Bureau of Community Development at the University of Washington provided a community out-reach program to cities and towns in Washington. Provides historical evidence of the improvement to communities as specialists showed concerned citizens effective means to better their environment and improve business opportunities. The Bureau has now been cut by present budget difficulties yet this film remains as a testimony to that department's effective operations.

Description: Dr. Rock in China: 1 in. video, black/white, 60 min.
Custodial History: Donated by the National Geographic Society
Scope and Content: Dr. Joseph Rock, noted anthropologist of the 20's, explored regions of China including the village of Na Khi. He left many of his papers and some film footage to the University of Washington were he did some of his later work. This is a compilation of that footage, together with addition material, by the National Geographic Society for their 100th anniversary, and was donated to the University of Washington in thanks for our assistance.

Scope and Content: The activities of the Univeristy of Washington's Bureau of Community Development in the Mount Adams area of Washington. The purpose and philosophy of Community Development and how the community study was organized to help the citizens of this lumbering area to help themselves.

Description: Origins of Sounds in Distensible Tubes: color, 8 min.
Scope and Content: Patterns of flow and areas of turbulence in fluids flowing through open channels and restricted orifices are visualized by means of a birefringent material called bentonite. A photo cell was used to visualize eddy currents and turbulence in the flowing liquids.

Description: A Priceless Gift: color, 60 min.
Scope and Content: Shows a corneal transplant performed at Providence Hospital, demonstrating the removal of the cornea from the donor eye, the operation and the subsepuent satisfactory recovery of the patient. It emphasizes the need for corneas at the Eye Bank and indicates the methods by which potential donors may grant their eyes to the Bank.
