Historical Note

Clifton B. Stevens was born to William and Ellen Stevens on December 5, 1874 in Brooklyn, Minnesota. When Clifton was 15, his family moved to Eugene, Oregon, where he soon began attending classes at the University of Oregon. At the time, he was one of just 215 students on campus.

As a sophomore, Mr. Stevens was a contributing editor for the university newspaper, The Reflector, writing for both the Educational Topics and Exchange Notes sections. Tragically, on December 31, 1892, Clifton was killed by a shock from the electric lights on campus; he was just 18. He is buried in the Eugene Masonic Cemetery.
