- Jean H. Futrell (1933-) was a research scientist who served as a professor of Chemistry at the University of Utah from approximately 1967 to the 1980s. This collection contains 6 black-and-white and color photographs depicting Futrell and photographs of equipment used in his work and experiments, particularly mass spectrometers.

Biographical Note
Jean H. Futrell was born on October 20, 19343 in Grant Parish, Louisiana to Ellen Catherine Padgett and Homer E. Futrell. He received a BS in Chemical Engineering from Louisiana Technology University in 1955 and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1958. Between 1958 and 1966, Futrell worked as a research scientist for various companies, including Exxon and Aerospace Research Laboratories. In 1967, Futrell joined the Chemistry department at the University of Utah, teaching there until the 1980s. In 1986, Futrell began working as the Chair of the Chemistry and Biochemistry department at the University of Delaware.
Content Description
The Jean H. Futrell photograph collection consists of 1 box containing 6 black-and-white and color photographs. Four of the six photographs have printed captions on the backs which are reproduced in the item-level description. According to a note included with them, the first two images are "copies of photographs taken for a medical examination. The medical examination was needed for an EPA Grant project entitled 'Gas Liquid Chromatography - Electron Impact Mass Spectrometry for analysis of Dioxius in Environmental Samples.' The People (UofU professors and grad studnets) involved in the sttudy were: Herbert Brant, Dale Chatfield, Thomas Elwood, Jean H. Futrell, David Smith, and Michael Greer. These photographs came from the Jean H. Futrell colleicton in the University Archives."
