Historical Note

Horace Davis Thomas (1905–1967) was a geologist and professor who taught at the University of Wyoming and served as Wyoming State Geologist. He earned his undergraduate degree in 1926 and an M.A. in geology in 1928, both from the University of Wyoming, and completed his Ph.D. in geology at Columbia University in 1935. Thomas taught stratigraphy, paleontology, and petroleum geology at the University of Wyoming from 1931 until his death in 1967. His primary research focus was the Permian stratigraphy of Wyoming and the western United States. In addition to his academic work, Thomas served as Wyoming State Geologist beginning in 1941 and held the role until his passing. He was also active in professional organizations and served as vice president of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists from 1955 to 1956.

This collection contains Thomas’s professional papers and research data. This includes subject files on oil fields, oil exploration, and geological studies in Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Nebraska, and other states. The collection also contains professional correspondence, teaching materials, and personal notes from Thomas's time as a student.
