Biographical Note

Michael Joseph “Mike” Gorrell is a Utah journalist. Gorrell began his career in the 1970s at the weekly newspaper The Green Street, based in Murray, Utah. In 1983, Gorrell began working for The Salt Lake Tribune. At The Salt Lake Tribune, Gorrell covered numerous topics, including: natural disasters, weather, water, environment, tourism, skiing, coal mining, the Olympics, and business.

Content Description

The Michael Joseph Gorrell photograph collection consists of 3 boxes of material arranged by subject and dating from approximatley 1980 to 2010. Box 1 consists of color photographs related to the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic games and other olympic games. Many of the images are digital only. Box 2 consists primarily of postcards collected by Gorrell during his travels while reporting on the Olympics, as well as photographs taken by Gorrell during those travels. Box 3 also contains copy prints of historic mining photographs and images related to flooding and flood control in Utah. Locations in these images include Bear River Bird Refuge, Utah Lake, American Fork, Mountain Dell Reservoir in Parleys Canyon, Little Cottonwood Canyon, Emigration Canyon, Willard Bay, Great Salt Lake, Liberty Park, Jordan River, I-80, Union Pacific Railroad tracks, Bountiful, Layton, as well as Granger High students and others filling sandbags to control flooding. Box 3 is oversize and contains images related to flooding and flood control, particularly during the 1983 flood in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Most of the images in this collection were collected by Gorrell and are under copyright of their creators.
