Historical Note

Harstine Island is located in Mason County, Washington. It is a forested island in southern Puget Sound, 10 miles north of Olympia. The second largest island in the Puget Sound, it was named for Lt. Henry J. Harstein, a U.S. Navy territorial explorer. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, the island's population is about 1,000 people.

The photographs portray three years of a young woman's childhood on Harstine Island, including: class portraits, houses, friends, family, and pets. The photographs are in chronological order as they appeared in the album. The creator of the album identifies herself as "me" in the album, and is described in this finding aid as "young woman," "daughter," or "girl."
