Historical Note

The Utah Endowment for the Humanities funded the Oral History Institute of Salt Lake City to conduct oral history interviews documenting the experiences of Utah's ethnic and racial minority communities. Interviewees were selected from African American, Greek, Jewish, Japanese, Mexican, Hispanic, Chinese, Ute, and Italian communities, most of whom were fifty-five years of age or older. The project sought to examine how these communities experienced and were influenced by the broader culture of Utah. The African American interview series was conducted between 1982 and 1988, although the events described by participants span from 1889 to 1988. The project served as a follow-up to an earlier oral history effort conducted in the early 1970s but addressed different topics and perspectives. Interview transcripts from 1982–1988 form the core of the collection, with some corresponding cassette tapes and photographs preserved in the Special Collections Multimedia Division at the J. Willard Marriott Library. Materials from the project were transferred to the library from the Oral History Institute in 1985 and 1988. Common themes in the interviews include family life, employment, religion, discrimination, civil rights experiences, and relations with the White population and the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Utah.

Content Description

This collection consists primarily of audiocassette recordings of oral history interviews conducted between 1982 and 1988 with African American residents of Utah as part of a broader oral history project funded by the Utah Endowment for the Humanities and carried out by the Oral History Institute of Salt Lake City. The project documented the experiences of members of Utah's ethnic and racial minority communities, focusing on how their cultures and lives were shaped by the broader social environment of the state. Although interviews were conducted during the 1980s, the recollections of participants span nearly a century, from 1889 to 1988. The collection includes audio recordings of interviews, some of which correspond to transcripts housed in the related manuscript collection MS 0453 Interviews with African Americans in Utah. The materials were transferred to Special Collections at the J. Willard Marriott Library in 1985 and 1988. In some cases, multiple interview sessions were recorded on the same audiocassette, sometimes on different dates. Interviews document a wide range of topics related to African American life in Utah, including family histories, migration to the state, employment, religious life, education, community formation, discrimination, civil rights activism, and relationships with the White population and the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The collection is arranged alphabetically according to the original organizational scheme established during initial processing. The materials were received and processed in two separate donations and were originally described as two distinct collections. This collection now incorporates materials formerly housed in A0326 Black American Oral History Project, which no longer exists as a separate collection. The current arrangement preserves the earlier alphabetical structure and aligns with the organizational scheme used in the associated transcript collection, MS 0453 Interviews with African Americans in Utah. Audiocassettes in the collection were sometimes used to record multiple interview sessions, and in some cases later interviews were recorded on the same cassette as earlier sessions on different dates. When known, these multiple recording dates and sessions are noted at the item level in the finding aid.

Acquisition Information

Donated by the University of Utah Oral History Institute in 1985 and 1988.
