Historical Note

In October 1995, Boeing machinists in the International Association of Machinists (IAM) District Lodge 751 went on strike for 69 days in response to layoffs and attempts by Boeing to slash their healthcare benefits. Boeing retirees, some of whom had retired early at the encouragement of the company, also found their promised healthcare and pension benefits slashed. In response, Boeing Retirees on the Line was formed by retirees to support the strike and demand increased benefits for retirees, including cost of living adjustments (COLA) for retirement income. The organizing committee was co-coordinated by Henry Noble, a Boeing retiree and member of the Freedom Socialist Party, and retiree Tom O’Brien.
