Content Description
The Benjamin Morgan Roberts papers (1841-2002) consist of a Homestead certificate signed by President James A. Garfield; Nauvoo House Association stock share notes; a Provo Volunteer Hose and Engine Company note to his son-in-law, James Farrer; a biography; post cards; photocopied photographs; and news clippings. Benjamin Morgan Roberts (1827-1891) was a private in Company D of the Mormon Battalion under the command of Captain Nelson Higgins. The Mormon Battalion was established in 1846 by order of President James K. Polk after war was declared against Mexico. After his service Roberts settled in the Utah Territory. There, one hundred and sixty acres of land had been granted to him by President James A. Garfield. The news clippings are about the Mormon Battalion.
