Biographical Note

Forrest Johanson, an avid map collector, became interested in mining history when he was a high school student digging up pioneer remnants in the Cascade Mountains. Turning his focus in another direction, he began collecting books and artifacts relating to mining engineering technology. In 1980 he visited Fox Bookstore in Tacoma and purchased 350 original maps that originally belonged to Raymond P. Tarr. The maps in this collection came from Tarr's collection.

Content Description

The Forrest Johanson Collection of Pacific Northwest Mining Maps consists of 302 maps related to mining and mining activities in the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Idaho, Alaska, and British Columbia), and particularly in Washington State, including Cowlitz, Grays Harbor, Lewis, Pacific, Pierce, and Skamania (St. Helens Mining District) counties. The collection has important historical, environmental, and economic information for this area.

Covering the time period from the 1890s through the 1960s, the maps provide detailed locations of mining claims, mining camps, man-made structures, and mine shafts. Many also show USGS townships, range and sections, trails, railroad tracks, lakes, mountains, rivers, and streams. The maps are produced on a variety of media, including paper, linen, and tracing paper and done by several different reproductive print processes, including blueprint, blue line, and brown line.
