Historical Note
Peter Peyto Good (d. 1886) and George Venable Smith (1943-1919), progressive advocates of labor rights and anti-Chinese activists, proposed a utopian colony in 1886. Smith, together with Laura E. Hall and John J. Knoff (also known anti-Chinese activists), founded the Puget Sound Co-operative Colony (PSCC) in 1887 in what is now Port Angeles, Washington. The Colony earned revenue from crop and dairy farming, logging and a sawmill. At its peak, the co-op had over 1000 members. Communal buildings included a hotel on the beach and a communal kitchen and dining hall. The Puget Sound Co-operative Colony went bankrupt in 1894 after the Panic of 1893, which caused the collapse of the timber market. The sawmill was lost to fire and most of the buildings were abandoned before 1904 when the PCCS was formally dissolved.
