Historical Note
John H. McIlvain was a Quaker, lumber mill owner, self-educated ornithologist, and naturalist. McIlvain's interests sent him to the American West in the 1850s to Fort Laramie and other western forts, where he studied and gathered ornithological specimens and observed frontier life and the lives of the North American Indians.
