Biographical Note
Carl Evan Hanson (1914-1995), also known as "Brick", lived in Spokane, Washington. He was the owner and operator of Brick Hanson Auto Glass and Trim in Spokane and pursued a musical career which ended in 1938 when he married Naomi Peasley at the age of 23 and 22 respectively. Hanson played in 'hillbilly' music bands. His early groups were Carl Hanson's Music Millers and Carl Hanson's Swedish Band. Hanson played venues such as VFW Halls, Elks Lodges, Lion Clubs, and hotel ballrooms. He also played in bands assembled by Walt Allen. Hanson started playing with the Beverly Hillbillies in 1935. This band had a lot of turn over including Zeke Manners, the accordion player, who left for New York and was replaced by Carl Hanson. Hanson received a telegram in September 1936 inviting him to join the Colorado Hill Billies in Seattle. Carl Hanson decided to form his own country band called The Yokum Boys. In 1937 they played the Peoples Theater in Potlatch, Idaho. Hanson played in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Utah, and North Dakota.
The Colorado Hill Billies was formed in the early 1930s. Newspaper reports from that period indicate they frequently toured and performed on live radio broadcasts over KFKA, KFEL, and KOA. During the late 1930s, they recorded some transcription discs for the Titan and C. P. MacGregor companies. There was a movie that used Walt and his Colorado Hill Billies music called "Swing, Cowboy, Swing" in 1946. In 1949 it was renamed "Bad Man from Big Bend."
Content Description
Carl Evan Hanson (1914-1995) was an accordion player in several 'hillbilly' music bands. The scrapbook tie bound in brown cloth boards has 27 paper pages with ephemera attached with glue or left loose. There are broadsides, contracts, newspaper clippings, maps, correspondence, photographs, and other ephemera that Hanson collected about his traveling bands. Carl Hanson annotated the pages relating his experience at hotels and theaters and everyday things that happened in his life. Hanson performed in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Utah, and North Dakota.
This scrapbook contains images and words that depict racist and derogatory behavior. Even as the University of Washington and University Libraries condemn them, we have not edited, redacted, excised or otherwise altered these pages, no matter how shocking or offensive they may be. They reflect shameful and regrettable aspects of our nation's history, but remain included as part of an honest presentation of that history and of the primary source material. These offensive words and images also demonstrate what the members of our nation subjected to such discrimination faced in their daily lives, as well as serving as a reminder that the struggle for equity continues today.
