Historical Background

Maynard Hospital opened March 14, 1933, on the premises of the Martha Washington Hospital at 1309 Summit Avenue, Seattle. It was named in honor of Seattle's first doctor, Dr. David S. Maynard. It was was a small hospital known for its charm, especially its lawns and rose garden, and high standards of care. It was directed by a group of five doctors. In 1961, it was purchased by the Stewards Foundation, and on April 1, 1971, Maynard's premises were taken over by Seattle General Hospital, which built a new wing, surgeries, X-ray, laboratory and dining room. In 1975, Swedish Medical Center was born from the merger of three Seattle hospitals: Doctors, Swedish and Seattle General.
