Biographical Note

Norman Jenisch Rose is a professor emeritus of chemistry at the University of Washington and dean emeritus of UW Bothell. Rose received a B.A. in 1957 from Knox College and a Ph.D. in 1960 from the University of Illinois. He was appointed to the faculty of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Washington in 1966, with promotions to associate professor in 1968 and full professor in 1974. His research interests included the design, synthesis, and study of coordination compounds of transition metals, including lanthanides. He also had a particular interest in the issue of lead in housewares. During his tenure, Rose served as chair of the Faculty Senate, received a UW Distinguised Teaching Award in 1988, and served as acting UW Provost in 1993. Rose then became the dean of the University of Washington--Bothell and vice provost in 1994 and served in that capacity until 1998.
