Historical Note

Harry S. Read (1898-1984) was first employed by Standard Oil Company (Indiana) in 1918 and held sales positions in the Milwaukee Division. He left Standard in 1921 to enter the independent marketing business in Wisconsin and Illinois. During that time, he helped organized the Sterling Oil Company. He returned to Standard in 1926 after the company acquired a majority stake in Edward L. Doheny’s petroleum interests, including the Pan American Petroleum and Transport Company, in 1925. The Pan American Petroleum and Transport had been incorporated by Doheny in 1916 as the holding company for his Mexican Petroleum Company, Huasteca Petroleum Company (Mexico), and California oil properties.

Beginning in 1926, Read served Standard in Alabama and later as assistant manager of the Tennessee and Louisiana Divisions. In 1945, he became vice president and general manager of Pan Am. In 1949 Pan Am Southern Corporation was founded and Read was appointed vice president in charge of marketing. He was a director and member of the executive committee. In 1957, when Pan Am Southern merged into the American Oil Company Read retired and established a consulting service with an office in New Orleans. He became affiliated with the Society of Independent Gasoline Marketers of America (SIGMA) in June 1958. He retired from active work in 1964.
