Historical Note

Charles Frederick Lambert (1887-1971) was an author of Western history and poetry. He was born in Cimarron, New Mexico, to Henri and Mary Lambert and named after William Frederick Cody (Buffalo Bill), who was his godfather. Henri Lambert owned and operated Lambert's Inn (later the St. James Hotel) in Cimarron. Fred Lambert was sworn in as a territorial marshal at the age of sixteen. He was also a deputy sheriff and deputy game warden in Cimarron. Lambert operated the Aztec Mill, built by Lucien Maxwell in 1864, as a museum. The mill was later taken over by the Cimarron Historical Society. Lambert's interest in history was supported by his talent as an artist. He 1948, he published a book of his poetry and drawings titled Bygone Days of the Old West. Lambert married Katie Hoover, also of Cimarron, New Mexico.
