Historical Note

Between 1946 and 1958, the United States government detonated 24 nuclear weapons on Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The tests were done on seven sites representing various conditions, including the air, under water, on the sea, and on the reef. The United States promised the residents of Bikini Atoll that they would be able to return; however, the detonation damaged the water and soil, making it impossible for residents to farm or fish. Bikini Islanders sued the United States government in 1975. Since then, the United States government has paid over $75 million in funds and trust to the people of Bikini Island and their descendants.
