Historical Note

Burton Jones Reno (1877-1942) came to present-day Campbell County, Wyoming, in 1902. The next year he enlarged his holdings by acquiring neighboring properties. He became a sheep rancher. He set up his sons Burton Everette Reno (1900-1947) and Floyd C. Reno (1904-1976) with sections of his holdings. Everette and his wife Pauline managed their holdings in the 1930s and into the 1940s. Their son Burton Keith Reno (1927-1968), along with wife Dorothy, continued ranching operations in the late 1940s and even added elk in the 1960s. When Burton Keith Reno died, the ranch then went to son Bill Reno. In the 1970s, coal was discovered underneath the ranch land. The federal government owned the coal, and the Renos chose to sell the ranch in 1980 to Atlantic Richfield rather than stay with mining activity surrounding them. The Black Thunder mine was built on the land and the Jacobs Ranch and Antelope mines were located at the north and south ends, respectively.
