American Friends Service Committee Camp, Orcas Island, Washington
On August 1, 1945 the American Friends Service Committee started Friends Camp, "An Interracial Children's camp" with thirty-nine children in attendance from varying racial and religious backgrounds at Quaker Cove on Fidalgo Island. The following year the campsite would change to Deception Pass, Washington. Friends Camp was held at Moran State Park on Orcas Island, starting in 1948, with the goal of providing a low-cost camping program for children ages 8-13. The camp encouraged families of all races, nationalities and religions to apply and wanted to promote interracial understanding through planned educational programs. Camp programs and activities included hiking, overnight trips, boating, swimming, sports and games, crafts, fishing and campfires. Hazle Chapman became director of the camp in 1952.
