Summary
The Intercollegiate Athletics Records document the operation, marketing and performance of the Oregon State University athletic department, as well as the pursuits of thousands of student athletes whose endeavors have been administered by the department. The collection, which is eclectic in its material types and sprawling in its topical strengths, provides particular insight into the unit's work in the 1930s-1950s and the 1970s-1990s. Multiple decades worth of meeting minutes and several hundred game and event programs stand out as highlights of this record group.

Historical Note

Oregon State athletics has experienced numerous successes in more than a century of competition. University teams won NCAA national championships in cross country (1961) and baseball (2006 and 2007), and individuals have claimed national titles in crew, gymnastics, golf, track and field, and wrestling. All-American honors likewise have been awarded to individuals in baseball, men's and women's basketball, football, gymnastics, men's swimming and wrestling. The highest individual awards granted in football and gymnastics, the Heisman trophy (Terry Baker, 1962) and American Award (Mary Ayotte, 1982) respectively, also have been received by OSU athletes.

Intercollegiate athletics began at Oregon Agricultural College in 1893 under the administration of President John Bloss. The first team sport, football, played its inaugural game against Albany College in November of that year. Since then, OSU's football team has participated in seventeen bowl games, including three Rose Bowls (1942, 1957, and 1965) and the 2001 Fiesta Bowl, and has also been the source of a number of notable upsets. In 1915, OAC traveled away from the West Coast for the first time to take on the top-ranked Michigan Aggies (now Michigan State), leaving East Lansing with a 20-0 win. In 1933, eleven OSC men playing both offense and defense for the entire game held defending national champion USC to a scoreless tie. They are now referred to as the OSC "Iron Men." The 1967 team again stunned the West Coast with two wins and a tie against three previously undefeated teams (USC, Purdue, and UCLA), earning the nickname, the "Giant Killers."

OSU quarterback and Heisman trophy recipient, Terry Baker, led the 1962 football team to a Liberty Bowl win. He was also a member of the 1963 men's basketball team, which made the second Final Four appearance in school history - the first was in 1949 - at the NCAA championship that year. Other men's sports teams, including tennis, swimming, polo, crew, and golf, were established during the 1920s. The first men's soccer team was fielded in 1988.

Prior to the start of the 20th century, OAC track and field, baseball, and women's basketball were formed, though women's basketball was not instituted as a formal varsity sport until 1976. With the implementation of Title IX legislation in 1973, women's varsity athletics expanded greatly, providing a significant increase in opportunities for female athletes. Women's crew, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming, and volleyball were all formed between 1967 and 1988. Pat Ingram (1973-1975) served as the first Director of what was then known as the Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Department.

The school's athletic directors have included James Arbuthnot (1906-1910) who also coached the wrestling team (first fielded in 1909), Edward J. Stewart (1912-ca. 1915), Richard B. Rutherford (1920-1924), William A. Kerns (1924-1928), Paul J. Schissler (ca. 1929-1933), Carl Lodell (1933-1937), Percy Locey (1937-1947), Roy S. "Spec" Keene (1947-1964), Amory T. "Slats" Gill (1964-1966), James Barratt (1966-1976), Dee Andros (1976-1985), Sylvia Moore (interim, 1985), Lynn Snyder (1985-1990), Dutch Baughman (1990-1997), Lee Schroeder (interim, 1997-1998), Mitch Barnhart (1998-2002), and Bob De Carolis (2002-present). From 1936 to 1985, the university's athletic director was a member of the executive committee of the Intercollegiate Athletics Board. Created by OSC President George Peavy to oversee Intercollegiate Athletics, the Board effectively ran the athletic department for several decades. It was disbanded in 1985 and replaced by an Athletic Advisory Committee. The Committee functions to advise the athletic director of department policy and is meant to represent the views of students, faculty, and alumni.

The Aggies/Beavers were members of the Northwest Intercollegiate Association from 1902-1914, and competed in the Pacific Coast Conference from 1915 to its disbanding in 1959. From 1959 to 1964, Oregon State had no conference affiliation. In 1964 OSU joined the Pacific-8 Conference which expanded to the Pacific-10 in 1978 and, in 2011, to the Pacific-12.

Content Description

The Intercollegiate Athletics Records provide detailed documentation of periods of activity and of specific events within the Oregon State University athletic department. The collection is particularly strong for the decades of the 1930s-1950s and the 1970s-1990s. It also provides granular insight into particular chapters in department history, including the implementation and unfolding of women's sports programs in the early 1970s following the passage of Title IX; a lawsuit filed against the department in the early 1990s by former softball coach Vickie Dugan; and various facilities remodeling and expansion projects, including efforts to improve the university's football complex in the 1980s and 1990s.

The records likewise include a large volume of game and event programs dating from 1908 to present day. These programs provide both a wealth of data concerning coaches, players and outcomes of various competitions, as well as a glimpse into artistic expression from past eras, as original artwork was often commissioned for a given game program.

A large volume of meeting minutes are held in the collection, including very thorough sets documenting decades of activity by the school's Intercollegiate Athletic Board - an important group that effectively ran the athletic department for much of its early history - as well as the Athletic Advisory Committee that succeeded the board in 1985. Minutes of meetings compiled by the Pacific-10 Conference also provide a glimpse into conference-level activities in the 1980s and 1990s.

Other topical strengths of the collection include the department's funding and chronic budget woes; the process by which OSU renewed its certification as a NCAA Division 1 athletic program in the mid-1990s; and the OSU football team's appearance in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on New Years Day, 2001.

Additional material types held in the collection include lengthy runs of press releases, an array of publications, five scrapbooks and a handful of audio-visual formats, including reel-to-reel audio, audio cassette, VHS and CD-ROM.

While the vast majority of this collection is open for research, certain materials in series VII (Legal Issues) and series IX (Title IX Compliance) are restricted. In addition, an embrittled scrapbook described in series XIV has been digitized and should be accessed primarily through its digital surrogate.

Acquisition Information

The records held in this collection were transferred to the University Archives and the Special Collections & Archives Research Center through dozens of accessions over multiple decades. Two publications, Fighting Aggies (formerly PUB 10-22x) and Athletics Brochures (formerly PUB 53), were removed from the Publications Groups and transferred to RG 007 in 2014.

OSU's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics maintains its own archive consisting of approximately 200 cubic feet of paper materials, photographs, film reels, videotapes and ephemera. A general inventory of these materials is available upon request of the Special Collections & Archives Research Center (SCARC), but access to the contents is by permission only of the OSU Department of Athletic Communications.

Numerous collections within SCARC document Oregon State's athletic enterprise over the course of school history. Collections of interest include the Sports Media Guides (PUB 054) as well as the Intercollegiate Athletics Photographic (P 031) and Moving Images (FV P 031) collections, and the OAC Athletic Union Records (RG 041). Dozens of photograph collections depict OSU's past sporting exploits, including specific collections compiled for Baseball (P 007), Basketball (P 006), Crew (P 015), Football (P 004), Track and Field (P 010) and Women's Athletics (P 009).

SCARC also houses a multitude of scrapbook collections devoted to athletics, including two focusing on OSC's participation in the 1942 Rose Bowl (MSS RoseBowl and MSS RoseBowlPanagis), the Oregon State College - New York University Football Game Scrapbook (MSS OSCNYUFootball), the Dale Story Scrapbook (MSS Story), the Berny Wagner Scrapbook (MSS Wagner) and the Oregon State University Women's Basketball and Field Hockey Scrapbooks (MSS WomenBBHockey).

The Oregon State University Memorabilia Collection contains additional information about notable sports teams, individuals and events. Additional moving images collections containing substantive content related to OSU athletics include the Alumni Association (FV P 017) and the News and Communication Services (FV P 057) Motion Picture Films and Videotapes. Photo collections not specifically devoted to athletics but containing a large number of relevant images include Harriet's Photograph Collection (P HC), Alumni Relations Photographs (P 017), News and Communication Services Photographs (P 057) and the Oregon Stater Photograph Collection (P 195).

Detailed Description of the Collection

The following section contains a detailed listing of the materials in the collection.

  • I: Intercollegiate Athletic Board Records, 1936-1985

    18 folders

    The Intercollegiate Athletic Board was formed by OSC President George Peavy in 1936 in connection with the administrative separation of intercollegiate athletics from other extracurricular activities on campus. The board's executive committee included the college athletic director as well as student, faculty and alumni representatives. This group effectively ran the school's athletic department, holding sway over administration of the department's budget, personnel, expenditures, merchandise sales and many other activities, up to and including ticket pricing and the awarding of varsity letters. The board typically met once or twice per academic quarter with special meetings called as warranted. Over time the board evolved away from a decision-making entity and more toward an advisory council to the university president. It was eliminated by OSU President John Byrne in 1985.

    The records of the Intercollegiate Athletic Board are a major resource for research on department activities in the 1930s-1950s and the 1970s-1980s. The minutes held in this series include supporting materials such as budget itemizations, transcripts of letters and internal reports meant to be reviewed by the board in their deliberations.

  • II: Athletic Advisory Committee Records, 1985-2001

    9 folders

    The Athletic Advisory Committee was created in late 1985 by OSU President John Byrne as a replacement for the disbanded Intercollegiate Athletic Board. Still in existence, the committee meets as needed and is charged with advising the OSU athletic director on issues of department policy. In this, the committee is empowered to review program and budget objectives, the academic performance of student athletes, and department compliance with regulations issued by the Pacific-12 Conference and the NCAA. The committee is also meant to express the viewpoints of students, faculty, alumni and supporters of OSU athletics. As such, the group is represented on search committees charged with the hiring of athletic directors and head coaches.

    The Athletic Advisory Committee meeting minutes held in this series often include supporting materials such as budget itemizations, correspondence, press releases and internal publications meant to be reviewed by the committee in their deliberations. The series' Athletic Department Structure and Activities Binders were given to committee members to provide background information on department affairs. With some variation, they were generally arranged into the following sections: Organization; Academics; Compliance; Development; Marketing/Sports/Events; Facilities; Tickets; Finance; and Personnel.

  • III: Department and Conference Meeting Minutes, 1985-1998

    18 folders

    The Administrative Support Staff of the OSU athletic department typically met every two weeks to provide updates on recent work, discuss day-to-day activities within the department, refine policies, and plan for upcoming events, including facilities work and meetings with donors. These records are detailed and provide valuable insight into the culture and daily affairs of the department in the late 1980s and 1990s.

    The 1998 Senior Staff meetings were held weekly and included Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart, Associate Athletic Directors Bob De Carolis and Marianne Vydra, and other managers within the athletic department. These meetings were used to provide updates on activities within the department and to chart action plans for upcoming events as well as longer term objectives, including facilities improvements and changes in personnel.

    "Administrative Advance" was the title given to athletic department retreats, generally held in the late Spring and lasting two to three days. The retreats were devoted to skill-building exercises, strategic planning of larger initiatives, and specific planning and assignment of particular tasks to individual staff members for the coming year.

    Pacific-10 Conference meeting minutes were compiled and distributed by the conference. They reflect discussion of agenda items at monthly meetings attended in person or over the phone by representatives of each member institution. Chief Executive Officer and Pac-10 Council meetings are included in this series, as are meetings of the conference's Men's Administrative Committee and Women's Administrative Committee. Discussion at several meetings required use of extensive Agenda Supplements, which are included as identified. These supplements often include the minutes of previous meetings of conference working groups.

  • IV: Funding and Budgets, 1947-1992

    The materials in this series document the finances of OSU's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, with particular focus paid to the difficult financial conditions faced by the department in the 1970s and 1980s. Hamstrung by poor performance on the football field and the dip in revenues that ensued, the department regularly operated at a deficit throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1988 the OSU men's and women's track and field programs were eliminated in a budget-cutting move. The situation was worsened by the passage in Oregon of Ballot Measure 5, a property tax limitation initiative that deeply impacted budgets university-wide.

  • V: Facilities, 1952-1997

    30 folders

    The construction and renovation of OSU athletics facilities are the primary focus of the materials held in this series. Beaver baseball has been played at Coleman Field since 1907, making it the oldest college baseball facility still in use. Parker Stadium, renamed Reser Stadium in 1999, has been home to OSU football since its dedication on October 24, 1953. The football complex has been renovated and upgraded numerous times, with major expansions including the building of the Valley Football Center in 1990 (later enlarged in 1996) and the construction of a new east grandstand in 2007. Oregon State basketball has been played at Gill Coliseum since 1949 and Wayne Valley Field served the needs of the university's track and field program from 1974-1988.

    Detailed documentation of the first modern renovation and expansion of Parker Stadium is held in this series. Completed in two phases, this chapter of the stadium's improvement schedule included the creation of a new VIP section and installation of aluminum seating to replace existing wooden bleachers (1987), and later the addition of a new press box, twelve skybox suites, a roof to cover much of the west grandstand and various infrastructure upgrades (1991).

    Home to OSU football operations, the Valley Football Center was expanded from its original footprint of 12,000 square feet to over 59,500 square feet in 1996. Once enlarged, the Valley Center absorbed the football program's locker room, equipment area and training facilities.

    A disparate collection of reports comprises the bulk of this series. Included are annual reports, strategic planning proposals, budget reviews, a self-study, an early compilation of sports statistics and a scholarly publication on patterns of drug use among student athletes. The lists held in this series provide a useful compendium of varsity letter recipients from 1950-1983 and also include a roster of department staff in 1973-1974.

    The majority of this series is made up of materials documenting a lawsuit filed against Oregon State University by former softball coach Vickie Dugan, alleging hiring and wage equity discrimination. The series also includes records of an ACLU complaint filed on behalf of a group of female student athletes, both current and former, (Petersen, et al.) claiming sex discrimination within the athletic department. Law, et al. vs NCAA was a class action antitrust lawsuit arguing against NCAA rules that, at the time, restricted the range of salaries that could be offered to assistant coaches working at the collegiate level.

    Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, enacted by the 92nd United States Congress, stated that "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance." The impact of this legislation on high school and collegiate athletics programs was profound, as the act typically required a significant increase in expenditures supporting women's athletics to achieve parity with existing men's programs. In many cases, this shift meant creating new women's athletics programs, a situation that came to bear at OSU. Prior to Title IX, only crew (1967) existed as a women's intercollegiate sport within the Oregon State athletic department. Following passage of the legislation, women's golf, gymnastics and swimming were immediately established (1972), followed by softball (1975), women's basketball and volleyball (1976) and, later, women's soccer (1988).

    Most of the content held in this series documents a U.S. Department of Education - Office of Civil Rights audit of compliance with Title IX regulations by the OSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Note the large volume of restricted material held in this series. Researcher access to this component of the collection is limited to summary review by a staff archivist.

Programs collected from the Benny Awards, an annual ceremony celebrating all OSU student athletes, are also a part of this series. In most cases, the series includes programs for multiple games within the listed years. However, certain years may correspond to only one item.

    The Subject Files series consists largely of materials assembled by athletic department staff documenting specific projects, issues or themes existing within the purview of the department. The bulk of these materials date to the late 1970s and 1980s. Two noteworthy sets of materials that do not fall within this general description are the series' six oversize publicity and technical drawings created for the OSU crew team, and the microfilmed records detailing department activities conducted in the 1940s.

    This series consists of five scrapbooks documenting Oregon State athletics endeavors in 1937 and 1956-1962. Comprised primarily of newspaper clippings, the scrapbooks focus mostly on football, basketball and rally, and also reflect the historical rivalry between Oregon State and the University of Oregon. The 1937 scrapbook is in fragile condition and should be accessed primarily through a digital surrogate that has been created for researcher use and that is available upon request.

    • Description: Untitled Scrapbook

      This scrapbook contains newspaper articles primarily concerning football and basketball game schedules, predictions, and outcomes; pranks between rival schools; player histories; announcements of rallies; and conference and national rankings updates. Other sports mentioned include track and field and tennis. A number of the articles refer to Amory "Slats" Gill, OSU basketball coach from 1928 to 1964, and Joe Gray ("The Gray Ghost") an OSC halfback who received All-American honorable mention accolades in 1937. In addition to images of Gray, the scrapbook also contains newspaper photographs depicting basketball and football players and game play. The name of alumnus Beth Russell is written on one of the pages within the scrapbook.

      This item is embrittled and should be handled with extreme care. A digital surrogate has been created and should be the primary point of access for researcher use. It is available on request.

      This scrapbook consists of newspaper clippings describing the 1956-57 rally squad and rally events; games played during the regular season (Fall 1956) by the 1957 Rose Bowl Football team; festivities associated with the 1957 Rose Bowl including the game itself; and a "Prothro for President" rally held on the Portland State College campus. Images found in the scrapbook include newspaper photographs of team members, game play, the rally squad and homecoming court; the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena; and hand-drawn illustrations and whimsical comments related to the topics of given newspaper articles. The scrapbook also contains documents relating to the OSC Rally Squad, including the Rally Committee Constitution, narration of a card stunt, and instructions for participating in cheers led by the OSU Yell Leaders.

Of particular note are clippings related to Terry Baker's achievements in both football and basketball. Also included are stories relaying traditions and bets between Oregon State and University of Oregon students concerning the Civil War football game. Several loose clippings and a full-color schedule poster for the 1959 football season have been arranged into a folder adjacent to the scrapbook. These loose items also include a letter from Dean of Men Dan Poling, admonishing the rally squad for a reported prank performed during a freshman basketball game.
