Biographical Note

Anne M. Butler relocated to USU in 1989, after having taught for a decade at Gallaudet University for the Deaf in Washington, D.C. Dr. Butler earned her doctorate from the University of Maryland and her undergraduate degree from Towson State University in Maryland. Dr. Butler served as associate and later senior, editor of the Western Historical Quarterly until her retirement in 2002. At the time of her retirement she was Distinguished Trustee Professor of History. Anne Butler passed away in Florida on November 10, 2014.

Content Description

Upon retirement, Dr. Butler deposited her papers with University Archives. At her request, the papers were sealed until 2014. The collection consists of Dr. Butler’s work on various departmental and campus committees, correspondence with students and colleagues, and research materials for her major works on western American history, particularly that of women prostitutes.
