The Elanor Roberts Baltzell Letter was written to Mrs. H. R. Wahoske of Great Falls, Montana by Eleanor R. Baltzell, on July 9, 1924 after reading the proceedings of the Montana Conference of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Great Falls. The letter discusses about her father, Thomas P. Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Eleanor Christy Roberts Baltzell was born in 1874, the eldest daughter of Thomas Paschall Roberts and Juliette Emma Christy. She married William H. Baltzell in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1901. Eleanor became an early member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was assigned membership number 675. She died on November 19, 1959.

On July 9, 1924, Eleanor R. Baltzell wrote to Mrs. H. R. Wahoske of Great Falls, Montana after reading the proceedings of the Montana Conference of the Daughters of the American Revolution which had recently convened in Great Falls. Baltzell wrote about her father, Thomas P. Roberts and his work with the Northern Pacific Railroad when the line was being surveyed in Montana during 1872 and 1873. Thomas, who worked with his own father, William Milnor Roberts, named many geographic features in the state, and Mrs. Baltzell pointed out paginated references to his work appearing in Olin D. Wheeler’s The Trail of Lewis and Clark, 1804-1904 (New York: G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 1904).

An original letter written by Eleanor Roberts Baltzell was donated to Montana State University by Ms. Leigh Spencer of the Montana State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution during a public ceremony of the organization held at Fairmont Hot Springs, Montana on April 30, 2015.
