The Department of Oral Medicine is one of ten departments that reside within the School of Dentistry, which was established at the University of Washington in 1945. The department offers courses and educational experiences at the professional, post doctoral, and continuing education levels and engages in a significant number of research and scholarly activities involving special and disabled patients, orofacial pain, diseases of the mouth, salivary dysfunction, and orofacial imaging. Oral medicine patient care includes the management of patients with diseases of the oral soft tissues, oral cancer care, and oral cancer therapy complications, facial pains and Temporomandibular Disorders, atypical conditions such as sensory and motor dysfunctions of the jaws, salivary disorders, behavioral medicine as relates to oral symptoms and conditions, and orofacial diagnostic imaging. The department operates a number of special clinics that provide care to patients with these problems and welcomes referrals to clinical services or direct contact with patients wishing evaluation and/or treatment.
