Historical Note

Puget Sound Power and Light Company is a private utility which served the Puget Sound region and formerly served Seattle as well. It was incorporated in 1912 as Puget Sound Traction, Light & Power Company with the consolidation of Seattle Electric Company, Seattle-Tacoma Power Company, Puget Sound Power Company, Pacific Coast Power Company (Washington), and Whatcom County Railway & Light Company. The present name was adopted in 1919. The company reorganized after the Public Utiltiy Holding Company Act was passed in 1935. Predecessor companies include: Cascade Power Company, 1927-1931; Central Washington Gas company, 1913-1923; Montesano Light & Waster Company, 1905-15; Mountain Spring Company, 1893-1913; Mutual Electric Light & Power company, 1919-1923; North Coast Power Company, 1915-1924; Northwest Electric & Water Works, 1914-22; Olympia Light & Power Company, 1892-1923; Pacific Coast Power Company, 1899-1912; Pacific Northwest Traction Company, 1909-1930; Puget Sound Power Company, 1902-1912; Puget Sound Traction, Light & Power Company, 1912-1925; Seattle Cataract Company, 1899-1909; Seattle Electric Company, 1899-1930; Seattle Tacoma Power Company, 1903-1912; Snoqualmie Falls & White River Power Company, 1902-1912; Snoqualmie Falls Power Co., 1898-1907; Tacoma Cataract Company, 1899-1906; Tacoma Industrial Company, 1902-1912; Union Electric Company, 1892-1899; Washington Coast Utilities, 1916-1924; Washington Electric Company, 1927-1934; Washington-Oregon Corporation, 1910-1915; Western Washington Power Company, 1912-1927.     Scope and Content: Files of Frank McLaughlin, Puget Sound Power and Light Company, 1931-1960. Many of the files concern rivalry with Seattle Lighting Department and subsequent sale, also prospective merger with Washington Water Power Company.

    Scope and Content: Bound notebook of the Seattle Electric Company detailing Seattle's electrical distribution system, including poles, substations and overhead wires; documents estimating the value of tracks owned by the Puget Sound Traction, Light & Power Company, over which Puget Sound Electric cars were operated; and detailed specifications for passenger cars operated by Puget Sound Electric. All sections contain snapshots documenting electrical systems or passenger cars. Contains only "Part II" of a presumably larger collection.
