Biographical Note
Indiana-born Fendel Sutherlin arrived in Portland in 1847. Returning from the California gold rush in 1849, he persuaded his landowner father, John Franklin Sutherlin, to migrate to the Umpqua Valley in western Douglas County, Oregon. His donation land claim later became the town of Sutherlin. Fendel married Lucy Richardson in 1854. Their daughter, Anne, married Frank Waite.

Album containing 56 black and white snapshots and portraits, circa 1880-1956, depicting members of the Sutherlin and Waite families. The album also contains clippings. Many people in the album are unidentified; those who are identified include Anne Sutherlin Waite, Genevieve Shaver, Helen Hamilton Clarke, George Thomas Stewart, Fendel Sutherlin Waite, Mildred Maude Waite Stewart, and Eloise Masie Waite McConnell; images in the album also depict descendants and friends. Locations include Sutherlin and Sauvie Island, Oregon, including images of a flood on Sauvie Island in 1928 or 1929.
