Biographical Note
Thomas Raftery was the Principal of Kingston (Ulster?) Academy, in Kingston, New York in the early 1880s. He moved to Washington Territory probably around 1885. In 1886, an article appeared in a local newspaper in Kingston about Raftery prompting Carolyn Arnold, a former pupil at the school, to write him a letter. The letter in the collection is his reply to her. At the time of his reply, he was teaching at the Territorial University in Washington Territory. According to an index card included with the collection, Carolyn Arnold was still living in Kingston in 1952 when the collection was donated. Carolyn Arnold died in 1957.
