Historical Note

Immediately following the end of the Civil War, veterans' clubs began to be established across the United States. The Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), a fraternal organization of Union Army veterans, was first established in Decatur, Illinois, in April 1866. Other "posts" (as local organizations were called) formed rapidly for the "defense of the late soldiery of the United States, morally, socially, and politically," and the G.A.R. became a powerful national organization, known for the success of its political lobbying efforts.

G.A.R. Abraham Lincoln Post No. 4, Walla Walla, Washington Territory, was organized February 8, 1881.
