Historical Note

The Washington State University College of Education prepares teachers, school administrators, and other specialists for schools and colleges. It is accredited with the National Council for Accreditation Of Teacher Education (For information on the College of Education before 1958 see the register of the College of Education Office Files, 1911-1958.)

The College of Education was considerably reorganized between 1958 and 1975. In October 1963 three departments were consolidated into the College of Education: the Department of Education, the Department of Physical Education for Women, and the Department of Physical Education for Men. Dean Zeno Katterle was succeeded by Dean George Brain in 1965. Also in that year, Summer Session administrative duties were transferred from the College of Education to the University's general administration office.

Many terms historically used to describe individuals and communities with disabilities are offensive and were used to dismiss, discount and dehumanize these individuals and communities. Terms often focused on a perceived impairment and not the person. MASC recognizes the harm caused by these terms. We retain the language in this finding aid to document history and preserve context.
