Thomas Lloyd was born in England on August 19, 1850. In 1856, his family departed for the Great Salt Lake Valley; however, due to the length of the trip and the birth of his sister, they settled instead in Newton, Iowa. In 1866, a missionary converted Lloyd to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and he became an active member. This collection contains a photocopy of Thomas E. Lloyd's journal as well as the original.

Biographical Note

Thomas Lloyd was born in England on August 19, 1850. In 1856, his family departed for the Great Salt Lake Valley; however, due to the length of the trip and the birth of his sister, they settled instead in Newton, Iowa. In 1866, a missionary converted Lloyd to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and he became an active member, attaining the priesthood on October 31, 1869 and being ordained an elder on March 19, 1871 prior to his Church mission in Illinois. Throughout the 1870s and 1880s, he worked as a shoemaker in Iowa.

Content Description

This collection contains a photocopy of Thomas E. Lloyd's journal as well as the original. The journal begins with a brief autobiography followed by a collection of his private written works. Among these writings are journal entries, poems, essays, prayers, and quotes.

Throughout his writings, Lloyd expresses many feelings and thoughts concerning Joseph Smith, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the scriptures. Many entries are notes pertaining to scripture study and rhetoric and literary studies as well as descriptions of debates that he attended and essays of his own.
