Biographical Note
Wilhelmine Schaefer (also spelled Schaeffer) Creel was the daughter of William and Harriet Schaefer. She was a pianist and faculty at the University of Washington Far Eastern Department and later in the School of Music for around a decade.
She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago. She studied music for a while in Budapest under Bartok and Kodaly for two years. She traveled to China in 1932 where she studied medicine and music. After the Japanese invasion, Creel moved to Tokyo where she would give piano concerts. In 1940 she returned to the United States, living in Seattle. Creel came to the University of Washington, initially to teach Japanese, around 1940. Creel moved to Indiana around 1950.
Creel's first husband, Dr. Herrlee Glessner Creel, was a University of Chicago professor of East Asian languages. Creel's second husband was Dr. Harold E. Driver, faculty in the Indiana University Department of Anthropology. Wilhelmine Creel died in 1979.
