Historical Note
The Hambleton Project was a non-profit organization based in Portland, Oregon with a mission to provide support to lesbian women with cancer and other life threatening conditions. Sharon Hambleton, the founder of the Project, received help from a lesbian cancer support group in Washington D.C. while undergoing treatment for her cervical cancer and envisioned beginning similar work in the Portland area. Unfortunately, she passed away from cancer in March of 1997. However, the work she began was taken up and continued by her friends and quickly grew with the help of members and volunteers.
Because of fear, anxiety, and prejudice towards lesbian women as healthcare patients, the Hambleton Project worked to guide and advocate for these women. The support of the group included providing services for individuals whose needs were not being addressed, bereavement groups for women who had lost a partner to cancer or illness, and outreach to the healthcare community in order to provide education on serving lesbian patients.
Content Description
The Hambleton Project Records house the records of a lesbian cancer organization. Spanning from 1997 to 2007, the collection consists of many textual documents as well as some more unique materials such as presentations, photographs, and artifacts including a mammography tumor display; and other audio-visual materials. Records cover the work of many committees and outreach events. The importance of this collection lies in its focus on the specific experience of lesbian women with cancer and serious illnesses. With an in-depth documentation of committee work and events, researchers with interests in LGBT health and the changing perspectives and treatment of lesbians in healthcare will benefit from this collection.

Series I: Administrative records, 1997-2007
The Administrative Records series, which dates from 1997 to 2007, includes meeting information, events, and other documentation of the several committees and administrative materials within the Hambleton Project Organization. Records of particular interest may be the "Removing the Barrier" training curriculum documenting a program to educate healthcare professionals on how to properly treat lesbian patients. This series is arranged alphabetical.

Series II: Outreach, 1997-2007
The Outreach series, ranging from 1997 to 2007, covers the many different outreach materials and records of the organization. Interesting materials include a mammography artifact portraying the size and shape of cancer tumors and a collage book overviewing the entire lifespan of the Hambleton Project.
