Biographical Note

Marie Fuhriman Olsen, of Providence City, Utah, was born October 19, 1925. After graduating from high school, she attended Utah State University and then served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) for two years. She married Blaine Olsen on January 15, 1948. They are the parents of eight children. In 1976, Olsen returned to USU to complete her BS degree and soon began working toward her MA in Sociology. Her thesis was entitled "Perceived Needs of the Elderly in Cache Valley." Olsen held the Rhea H. Gardner Scholarship from the USU Women's Center during the 1979-1980 academic year. She also received an undergraduate and graduate certificate in gerontology from the University of Utah. She was secretary for former USU President Daryl Chase. In her spare time Olsen worked to document the history of Providence, conducting numerous oral history interviews.

Content Description

The collection contains materials related to Marie Fuhriman Olsen's research interests, including Cache Valley residents and cities (especially Providence), aging, and USU President Daryl Chase and his administration (1954-1968). Each folder contains a brief information page (prepared by Special Collections staff) about the interviewee; this page is not included in the folder content description as it is not original to the collection. Materials include (but may not be included with each item): original cassette tapes, brief biographical information of the interviewees, transcripts, oral histories, news clippings, photographs (in negative format) and articles (written by Olsen from interviews she conducted). When included, cassette tapes are attached to the inside front cover of the folder. Because the collection came to USU in two different donations (1989 and 2001), some of the materials may be included twice. Althougth included together in this collection, boxes 6 and 7 were processed originally as a manuscript collection and were handled differently than boxes 1-5.
