Historical Note

The Graduate School of Social Work began modestly in 1937 as a one-year program offering a provisional certificate of Social Work. A two-year Masters of Social Work Program was later implemented in 1949.

During the period covered by the bulk of this collection, 1969-1992, the Graduate School of Social Work underwent much expansion. The primary example of this expansion was the building and dedication of the School's own facility on the southwest corner of the University of Utah Campus in 1971. The School expanded its educational opportunities during this era by establishing a Ph.D. program, a part-time program for non-traditional students, and a continuing education program for those already working in the social work profession. The School also expanded its community outreach by implementing such programs as the American Indian Training Program, The Child-Welfare Training Project, and the Social Research Institute.
