Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Hulet Martell Wells (May 4, 1878 - Feb 15, 1970) was chairman of the Socialist Party of Washington, president of the Seattle Central Labor Council, a founder of the Postal Clerks Union Local 28 in Seattle (1908), a founder of the Unemployed Citizen's League in Seattle (1931), and administrative assistant to Congressman Marion A. Zioncheck (early 1930's). He was convicted of sedition in 1918 and sentenced to two years at McNeil Island and later served at Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary until his release in November 1920

Scope and Content: Microfilm of selections from papers owned by Manuscripts and University Archives Division; included are: "I Wanted to Work" (pp. i, ii, 1-311) and "Russia in 1921 (pp. 1-70).

Scope and Content: The bulk of the Wells papers consists of his autobiography, “I Wanted To Work.” Due to heavy use, researchers are to use the photocopy of the manuscript (folders 2/1-2/7) for reading and photocopying.
