Historical Note

The Union of Democratic Filipinos (KDP, Katipunan ng mga Demokratikong Pilipino) emerged in 1973 within the Filipino American community as a direct response to Ferdinand Marcos’ declaration of martial law in the Philippines. The organization played a pivotal role in mobilizing opposition to U.S. support for the Marcos dictatorship, leading to the formation of the Anti-Martial Law Coalition (AMLC) in 1974, later renamed the Coalition Against the Marcos Dictatorship (CAMD).

The political foundations of the organization were inspired by the legacy of Carlos Bulosan and earlier Filipino socialist movements of the 1920s–1930s. They advocated a dual mission: supporting the National Democratic Movement in the Philippines, led by the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), and promoting socialist organizing within the U.S., particularly among Filipino American workers and students. In the early 1980s, the KDP shifted away from Maoist-aligned politics and became closely associated with Line of March (LOM), a U.S.-based Marxist-Leninist group.

In 1981 two Seattle-based KDP members and cannery union reformers, Gene Viernes and Silme Domingo, were murdered for their activism against Marcos and efforts to reform the Alaska Cannery Workers Union (ILWU Local 37). Their deaths led to the formation of the Committee for Justice for Domingo and Viernes (CJDV), which secured a landmark U.S. court ruling finding Marcos liable in a civil suit for orchestrating the killings. The KDP’s work contributed to broader anti-dictatorship movements, labor solidarity, and Filipino American political consciousness, leaving a lasting impact on transnational activism.
