Historical Note

The National Register of Historic Places is operating through the National Park Service. As part of a national effort to locate, evaluate, and preserve America's historical and archaeological resources, the program is authorized under the National Historical Preservation Act. To achieve its purpose, the National Register maintains an official list of America's historic places and structures. As a result of being listed, these historic sites gain national recognition and eligibility for Federal and other preservation aid.

Nominations for historic sites are made by the various State Historic Preservation Officers. These officers must use a standardized criterion to determine if a place qualifies as a historic site. Usually the site must be associated with either a significant historical event or person, or must be representative of a specific historic/artistic period or style. For the most part, cemeteries, birthplaces, graves, or religious structures are not eligible for consideration by the National Register unless the site or structure has a significant historic meaning beyond its primary function. Furthermore, the historical events associated with a site must have occurred more than fifty years earlier. (This time limit can be waived if the site has an extraordinary historic significance.)

Logan has a number of structures that are listed in the National Register. For example, the Center Street Historic District has many historical structures, including the Cache County Courthouse, the Logan Temple, and St. John's Episcopal Church. These structures demonstrate a variety of architectural styles, such as Neoclassical (Courthouse), Richardson Romanesque (Temple), and Gothic (St. John's). Most of the commercial buildings and houses located within the Historic District were built in a Victorian style that was popular in the 1870s.

Other historic sites in the state of Utah include the Park City Commercial Historic District, which is one of the best-preserved mining towns in Utah. Also, Salt Lake County is home to many historic structures, including the Utah State Capitol Building, the Cathedral of the Madeleine, and the Denver & Rio Grande Depot.
