Biographical Note
Robert George Schipf was born on April 12, 1923 in Mount Vernon, New York to Henry Schipf, a New York City fireman and Anna Staker Schipf. He was raised and educated in and around New York City and graduated from Cathedral Boys High School in 1941. He attended Brooklyn College where he obtained a bachelor of arts degree; University of Nebraska, where he received bachelor of science and master of arts degrees; University State of New York, where he earned another bachelor of science degree; and the University of Oklahoma, where he received his master of library science degree. Schipf served in the U.S. Navy in World War II as a pilot and stayed in the Naval Reserves until his retirement with the rank of second lieutenant in 1983.
Schipf was employed as a groundwater geologist in the U.S. Geological Survey. He also taught geology at Southwest Louisiana Institute and Humboldt State College in California. He went on to become science librarian at Southern Illinois University in 1961, and later at the University of Montana from 1968 to 1992.
Schipf was a longtime charter member and had served as secretary treasurer of the Weapons Collectors Society of Montana, a life member of the National Rifle Association, a member of the Museum of Mountain Flying, a member of Friendship Force of Western Montana, and a volunteer at the Military Museum in Missoula and St. Patrick Hospital.
Schipf married Mary Ann Downs in 1953. The couple had three children, Karen, John, and James.
Robert Schipf passed away on January 21, 2009 in Missoula, Montana.
Content Description
Robert Schipf’s Fluoridation Research consists of: Schipf’s personal correspondence and notes relating to fluoridation; anti-fluoridation publications that include an address on the pros and cons of fluoridation; national and regional clippings; a video and cassette tape recording of Dr. Robert Mick; leaflets (both national and international); newsletters; pamphlets; Libby, Montana fluoridation research; miscellaneous correspondence; a presentation on fluoride exposure; pro-fluoridation articles and publications; testimonies; and reports. The bulk of the collection consists of anti-fluoridation publications and miscellaneous items from the 1960s and 1970s.
